Black River Mission

At Black River Farm and Ranch, we empower young women through horsemanship and camp experiences by cultivating courage, confidence, and independence. Our mission is to inspire resilience, leadership, and decision-making skills, both in the saddle and in life. We encourage girls to discover their strengths, passions, and unique abilities in a supportive community.

The summer camp experience is incredibly important for several reasons. Firstly, it offers children a break from their usual routines, allowing them to explore new activities, make friends, and develop social skills in a supportive environment. Camp provides opportunities for personal growth and character development, teaching resilience, independence, and teamwork through challenges and group activities. Additionally, the structured yet relaxed atmosphere of camp fosters creativity, curiosity, and a sense of adventure, encouraging campers to try new things and discover their passions. The memories and friendships formed at camp can last a lifetime, contributing to a sense of belonging and positive self-esteem. We hope that throughout your camper’s experience at BR, they are able to have fun while learning and growing through unique experiences.

Horse Talk

Turning Your Horse Without Using the Reins

Last month, our horse talk was about using natural aids, or as we like to say at BR, the 4-basic aids, to get your horse to go and to stop. This month, we will learn how to use our aids to turn the house. The four basic aids are the seat (weight), the legs, the hands, and the rider’s voice. When we use these aids together, your horse receives clear and consistent communication about what direction you want them to.
